The Minutemen will return home to Rudd Field for a Saturday matchup against George Mason.
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team dropped their first road Atlantic 10 contest of the season as they fell to VCU 2-0 on Wednesday night as SportsBacker Field. The Minutemen (4-5-2 Overall, 0-2-0 A-10) outshot their opponent for the second straight match as they attempted 18 compared to 12 from VCU (6-4-0 Overall, 2-0-0 A-10) in a rematch of the 2017 A-10 Championship game.
The UMass offense forced most of the action in the first 17 minutes of the match as they created a pair of chances inside the box in the first six minutes as Kevin Boino and Yosuke Hanya each attempted a shot inside of 18-yards that was deflected away. Jack Fulton attempted a free kick from 28-yards out that led to the fourth UMass corner kick of the game in the 17th-minute.
VCU's first shot of the night came just a minute later by way of a dangerous Siad Haji shot from the right side that was deflected away from trouble by Konrad Gorich. The Rams offense kept applying pressure the rest of the half as they went on to match UMass' mark of six shots in the first 45 minutes, including a shot in the 20th-minute that went off the post from 22-yards away at the top of the box.
Marvyn Dorchin faced the only two shots on goal in the first as he picked up his first save in the 36th-minute on a one-handed block going to his left on a shot from in close.
VCU broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd-minute with the first of two Ram goals for Haji to go ahead 1-0. UMass responded by earning a penalty kick moments later that was blocked before attempts by Brandon Merklin and Alec-Michael Petrizzi followed within the next two minutes. VCU went on to extend their lead to two goals six minutes after their first score as Haji found the back of the net again in the 69th-minute to bring the score to a final 2-0.
UMass returns home for a Saturday afternoon matchup against another league foe in George Mason. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
