Men’s Soccer Drops Road Contest To Rhode Island, 3-2

Konrad Gorich and DeAndrae Brown each scored first half goals for the Minutemen.
KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Rhode Island but wound up falling to the Rams 3-2 on Wednesday night at the URI Soccer Complex. The Minutemen (5-6-2 Overall, 1-3-1 Atlantic 10) scored twice in the opening 21 minutes of play before Rhode Island (9-3-0 Overall, 3-1-0 Atlantic 10) answered back with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the first before heading to the locker room for halftime.
Konrad Gorich scored his first of the season in the 18th-minute of play, putting home a rebound goal from in close after an Alec-Michael Petrizzi free kick from 22 yards out was initially saved by the URI keeper. UMass nearly scored before Gorich's opening goal three minutes earlier on a Jack Fulton blast from 16-yards out that rolled just by the post for a goal kick.
UMass kept the offensive pressure going as DeAndrae Brown found some open space to record his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Brown took a pass on the UMass offensive side of the midfield and outran a pair of defenders down the right side before putting home the goal in the bottom left corner. The goal gave UMass their third shot on target in the opening 21 minutes their sixth overall compared to just one shot up to that point for URI before both teams finished with an even 12 shot attempts each.
Rhode Island answered the two consecutive UMass goals 10 minutes after Gorich's conversion as they finished the half with five shots and three on target, cutting the lead down to one in the 28th-minute on a Chae Brangman goal off a corner kick before Stavros Zarakostas knotted things up at 2-2 seven minutes later.
The Minutemen resumed the offensive attack following the equalizer as Brown found some space down the left side, firing a shot that curled a bit too far past the right post in the 38th-minute. Brown found himself streaking down the left side of the field again in the 62nd-minute, creating some open space for another shot that bent just around the outside of the right post.
Dominik Richter scored the game-winning goal in the 67th-minute, converting on a penalty kick into the bottom right corner of goal after the UMass defense was called for a handball on a Ram counterattack. The Minutemen came up with a late push looking for the equalizer, nearly finding it on an Eli Cronin shot and a Davis Smith header in the final two minutes of play.
The Minutemen continue their road trip this weekend as they head to Bronx, N.Y. for a Saturday matchup against Fordham at 7 p.m.
