Minutemen Shutout Fordham In 1-0 Road Victory

October 13, 2018 | Men's Soccer

DeAndrae Brown scored the game-winner in the 54th-minute while the defense picked up their fifth shutout of the year.

BRONX, N.Y.DeAndrae Brown scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season early in the second half as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team held off a late Fordham push to preserve the shutout in a 1-0 win on Saturday night at Jack Coffey Field. The Minutemen (6-6-2 Overall, 2-3-0 Atlantic 10) picked up their fifth shutout of the year in a rematch of the 2017 A-10 Championship semifinal as they held Fordham (6-3-3 Overall, 2-2-0 Atlantic 10) without a goal despite a late push.

The Minuteman defense held strong all 90 minutes in the win as they were pressured early by three Fordham corner kicks inside the first three minutes of play, ending with a Marvyn Dorchin save on a Joergen Oland header in the third minute. Dorchin came up with his second save in the 16th-minute, denying a goal at the near post on a Ram header on his way to finishing with a career-high six saves.

Konrad Gorich put a pair of shots on target for his only two shot attempts of the game as UMass finished with seven total shots with two on goal. Gorich nearly found Brown making a far post run in the 21st-minute on a free kick attempt in a dangerous area, but the pass had too much pace for Brown.

Samuel Asamoah found himself with the best attempt at breaking the scoreless tie up to the 37th-minute as the senior found some space behind the Ram defense, but sent a shot just wide right as Fordham keeper Rashid Nuhu was off his line upfield.

Brown would break through for his eighth goal of the year less than 10 minutes into the second half as the forward put the ball into the top shelf of the goal from in close after a Jack Fulton attempt was saved back out into traffic in front of the net. Brown's goal keeps the forward near the top of the league leaders in goals as he ranks second in the A-10 through 14 matches.

Fordham doubled their shot total in a 13-minute span down the stretch, attempting four shots from the 67th-minute to the 74th-minute as the UMass defense continued to respond to the pressure. Dorchin came up with a save in the 67th-minute for his third of the night up to that point, denying Fordham a chance from in close with no defenders to beat.

The Minutemen will return home to Rudd Field this week for their final two home matches of the regular season, beginning with Davidson on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Dayton on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
