Dwyer Named US Lacrosse Hall Of Fame New Jersey North Chapter’s Richard Rizk Award Recipient

Men’s lacrosse alumnus to receive “unsung hero” recognition in honor of contributions to the game
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse alumnus Charlie Dwyer will be inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame New Jersey North Chapter as the 2017 Richard Rizk "Unsung Hero" Award on Sun., Jan. 28, 2018. One of seven selected to the Class of 2017, Dwyer is being recognized as a member of the New Jersey lacrosse community whose continued contributions to the game help foster the growth and success of the sport locally, regionally and nationally.
Dwyer competed as a defenseman for the Minutemen during the 1983 and 1984 seasons and earned a letter during his senior year. Head coach Richard Garber's squad won eight games during Dwyer's senior season in 1984, including seven of its final nine. With Dwyer's contributions on the defensive end, the Maroon and White limited foes to 7.67 goals per game, including six or fewer during wins over Army, Boston College, Dartmouth, Hofstra and New Hampshire.
Following his competitive days at UMass and two more as a defenseman and defensive midfielder for the Western Massachusetts Lacrosse Club and Boston Lacrosse Club, Dwyer continued his involvement in the sport of lacrosse at the youth level. During the last 21 years, Dwyer contributed to New Jersey lacrosse as a coach and administrator locally and at the state level, including as a U15 team leader.
Since the spring of 1997, Dwyer nurtured to the growth of the Millburn-Short Hills lacrosse program as a coach, schedule and treasurer, while he assumed presidential duties for the organization in 2009. Additionally, Dwyer is a 17-year member of the North Jersey Junior Lacrosse League board of directors as a coach, administrator, treasurer and conference coordinator.
Dwyer is the fifth UMass men's lacrosse alumni honored recently by chapters of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The US Lacrosse Western Massachusetts Chapter Hall of Fame announced Norm Smith and Jeff Spooner as Class of 2017 inductees in October. Additionally, Scott Hiller earned a spot in the US Lacrosse Metro Long Island Chapter Hall of Fame Class of 2017 while Rich Donovan was the co-recipient of the 2017 Whitey Hendrickson Lifetime Achievement Award.
