Offense Clicks In 3-1 Men's Soccer Win At Saint Louis

Minutemen open league play with key road win against Billikens.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A pair of first half goals paved the way as the UMass men's soccer team picked up a key 3-1 road win over Saint Louis on Saturday night at Hermann Stadium. The Billikens opened the scoring in the 7th minute before the Minutemen responded with a pair of goals before halftime pacing UMass to the win.
The victory improved UMass to 6-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in Atlantic 10 action with the three goals scored standing as the most ever in a match against Saint Louis (2-5-1, 0-1-0 A-10).
The Billikens took an early lead as Lennart Hein scored on a penalty kick with just 6:41 elapsed in the first half. UMass responded nearly 10 minutes later when Alex DeSantis scored to equalize.
Davis Smith then tallied the first of his two goals in the 37th minute giving the Minutemen a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
Smith added an insurance goal in the 68th minute putting UMass up 3-1 giving him four goals in the last four matches.
The Billikens nearly got a goal back in the 72nd minute when Keaton Schieffer fired a hard strike that glanced off the crossbar.
For the match, Saint Louis held a 16-to-14 advantage in shots and a 3-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
Keeper Bardia Asefnia picked up the win making four saves, while Sascha Otte made two saves for the Billikens.
UMass will close out its non-conference slate on Tuesday at 4 PM when the Minutemen host Vermont at Rudd Field. The match will be streamed live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
