Late Rally Gives Men's Soccer 2-1 Win Over Vermont

Minutemen stay unbeaten at home to close out non-conference slate.
AMHERST, Mass. - Davis Smith and Alex DeSantis keyed a second-half comeback as the UMass men's soccer team defeated Vermont 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The win keeps UMass unbeaten at home this season and extends the Minutemen's unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches.
The win improved UMass, ranked 32nd in the most recent NCAA RPI release, to 7-2-2 overall. At Rudd Field this season, the Minutemen are unbeaten with a 6-0-1 record which marks the best opening home record since starting 6-0-0 in 1997.
After picking up a 3-1 win at Saint Louis to start Atlantic 10 play last Saturday, the Minutemen will return to league action this Saturday, Oct. 7 against Duquesne (Noon). The match will highlight the program's Alumni Weekend which will feature a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the 2007 College Cup team.
In Tuesday's action, Vermont (6-5-0) opened the scoring as Trevor Colazzo lofted a shot over UMass keeper Bardia Asefnia in the 13th minute of action. The Minutemen managed a pair of shots and a pair of corners in the balance of the opening half, but could not find the tying goal before halftime.
The Catamounts continued to hold the advantage until the 77th minute when Michael Rita chipped a cross inside the box where Davis Smith tapped home his fifth goal of the season. The score extended Smith's goal scoring streak to three matches with all five of his goals coming in the last five contests.
Nearly three minutes later, DeSantis put the Minutemen ahead with a 20-yard free kick following a Vermont foul giving the Minutemen a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute. The goal extended DeSantis' team-leading point total to 13 this season.
Vermont managed a corner in the 83rd minute but were otherwise kept out of any dangerous offensive situations by the Minutemen's defense for the balance of the match.
Overall, Vermont held a 9-to-8 advantage in shots with UMass placing four on goal and the Catamounts recording two on frame. UVM also held a 6-to-3 edge in corner kicks on the day.
Asefnia was credited with one save through 90 minutes, while his Vermont counterpart Alex Popovich made two saves.
