Women's Lax Downs Richmond 19-13 Staying Perfect in A-10 Play

Callie Santos notches career-high six goals in 49th straight league win.
AMHERST, Mass. - A career-high six goals by Callie Santos along with another strong day in the draw circle paced the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 19-13 win over Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. The win was the eighth consecutive of this season and extended the Minutewomen's NCAA record regular-season league win streak to 49 games.
Sunday's result also gave UMass (9-3, 4-0 A-10) sole possession of first-place in the A-10 standings after both teams entered the day tied with undefeated league marks.
Three of Santos' goals came consecutively in the second half after Richmond (8-4, 3-1 A-10) whittled a six-goal deficit to just three. Her three second half scores came in an 84-second span extending the Minutewomen's lead back to six, 17-11, with just under 12 minutes remaining.
Santos also added an assist for a career-high seven points. Stephanie Croke had a career-high four goals, while Holly Turner (3 assists), Hannah Burnett and Kiley Anderson each added two goals as well. Kaitlyn Cerasi had a career-high five assists to round out the top offensive performers.
Defensively, Sarah Crowley forced three turnovers while controlling three draws. Hannah Murphy had her fourth consecutive double-figure day in the draw circle controlling 13 of UMass' 22 wins in the game. In cage, Lauren Hiller made a career-best 14 saves to earn the win.
Richmond was led by Sam Geiersbach who had five goals and an assist, while Kim Egizi notched three goals and had five draw controls. Melissa Teel scored twice and added an assist. Megan Gianforte made nine saves, caused three turnovers and controlled four groundballs in the loss.
For the game, the Spiders held a slight edge in shots, 38-to-37, but it was UMass' 22-of-34 effort in the draw circle that tilted the possession in the Minutewomen's favor. Defensively, UMass was also stout on free position attempts holding Richmond 0-for-7 on the day while converting all three of its attempts.
The first half saw both teams make runs as a five-goal spurt put UMass ahead 7-3 after a Cassidy Doster score midway through the frame. Richmond pulled back within a goal thanks to a three-goal run of its own. Just 34 seconds after the Spiders pulled back within a goal, UMass notched three straight goals to push the lead back to four. Burnett and Santos both scored in the final 23 seconds of the first half giving the Minutewomen a 10-6 lead at the intermission.
Richmond scored first in the second half, but another three straight goals by UMass pushed the Minutewomen lead to 13-7 on a Burnett free position goal with 22:41 to go.The Spiders scored four of the next five to pull within three, 14-11, before Santos scored her three straight goals. Turner scored on a nifty feed from Santos at the 7:11 mark to give UMass its largest lead of the day, 18-11.
UMass will play on the road twice next week starting Thursday, April 13 at La Salle (3 p.m.) before heading to St. Bonaventure on Saturday, April 15 (Noon).
