April 07, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse

Trio of Minutewomen with hat tricks as UMass wins seventh straight.

DAVIDSON, N.C. - A dominant effort in the draw circle along with a trio of hat tricks offensively led the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 16-6 win at Davidson on Friday night at Richardson Stadium. The win marked the seventh straight of the season for the Minutewomen who extended their NCAA record to 48 consecutive Atlantic 10 regular-season wins.

UMass (8-3, 3-0 A-10) was led by Hannah Murphy who notched four goals and 12 draw controls. She eclipsed the 400 draw plateau for her career in the match moving into seventh all-time in NCAA history with 407. Alongside Murphy, the offense was led by three goals from Ashley Faulhaber (1 assist) and Kiley Anderson while Holly Turner had four points as well on a goal and three assists.

The Minutewomen's defense was anchored by Allison Ryan who had three caused turnovers and five groundballs, while Sarah Crowley had two caused turnovers, two draw controls and a groundball. Lauren Hiller earned the win in cage making three saves in just under 46 minutes of work before giving way to Aileen Kelly who closed the game making two saves.

Davidson (3-7, 1-2 A-10) was led by three goals from Annie Brockett and two from Sarah Kopp. Rose Woolson made 10 saves in goal taking the loss.

For the match, UMass won 18-of-24 draw controls giving the Minutewomen the advantage in offensive possessions. That translated to a 33-to-17 edge in shots as well.

A slow start to the night gave way at the 23:54 mark of the first half when Anderson put UMass on the scoreboard first before Davidson answered three minutes later to tie the game. That was as close as the night would be as the Minutewomen scored six consecutive goals over the next 17 minutes to break open at 7-1 lead with 2:56 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats broke up the run with 58 seconds to go cutting the UMass lead to 7-2 at the intermission.

Back-to-back goals from Callie Santos sparked a five-goal run to start the second half for the Minutewomen. Davidson scored three straight to pull back within single-digits, 12-5, but UMass again responded by scoring four of the next five goals to close the game.

UMass will return to action on Sunday, April 9 at 12:30 p.m. as the Minutewomen host Richmond at Garber Field. Admission is free and the game will be streamed live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
