HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jesse Leung scored a career high five goals, the most by a Minuteman in one game this season and one more than his season total of four entering the day. Leung scored on five of his six shots and scooped up four groundballs.
  • Devin Spencer's tally marked the first of his career. It came on a deflected play were Trainor sent a ball toward the top of the crease, which deflected off of Spencer's stick and landed in the back of the goal.
  • D.J. Smith totaled 15 saves in between the pipes, including 11 during the second half when UMass held Drexel scoreless into the final quarter. It was Smith's ninth game of the season with 10 or more saves and one away from his single-game career high of 16 against Brown (3/25).
  • In addition to his goal scored, which was the first of his career at UMass, McDonough provided five groundballs and three caused turnovers from his spot at long-stick midfield.
  • Isaac Paparo set the UMass record for caused turnovers in a season as he finished the day with 27 following two created against Drexel. The NCAA officially began recognizing caused turnovers prior to the 2010 season.
  • Close defenseman Tyler Weeks also had two caused turnovers to go along with three groundballs. It marked his most caused turnovers and second-most groundballs in one game this season.

FIRST QUARTER
Drexel led 3-1 heading toward the end of the opening quarter as Reid Bowering, Robert Frazee and Jacob O'Donnell each put one tally in for the Dragons to offset Jesse Leung's first of five goals on the day.

Tyler Bogart cut the deficit in half with his team-leading 24th goal of the season at the two-minute, 25-second mark. Bogart fielded a pass from Jeff Trainor 10 yards from the cage, bounced off a defender and fired a sidearm shot into the back of the cage.

SECOND QUARTER
Dom St. Laurent first of two conversions evened the game at 3-all with 13:15 to play in the quarter. St. Laurent created the play himself as he raced toward the right post, found space and reared back for low shot that sailed by Drexel goalie Jimmy Joe Granito.

Leung added his second of the day sandwiched around Drexel conversions by King Marshal and Cole Shafer as the Dragons held a 5-4 advantage with 5:49 to go.

The Minuteman defense clamped down on the Drexel offense following Marshal's goal and held the Dragons without another tally until the fourth quarter. The offense connected on the other end of the field with the final four tallies of the second quarter as the front half of an eight-goal run.

Mike McDonough scored unassisted and knotted the game at 5-5 only 10 seconds after Marshal's goal. Leung secured the hat trick with a diving play at the crease with 3:04 to go before Ben Spencer dodged his way into a shot opportunity with 62 seconds left in the half. To create the opening, Spencer planted his right foot and spun off of a Drexel defender to work his hands free for his first goal of the day.

St. Laurent notched his second tally in the closing seconds of the eventual second quarter when Trainor found St. Laurent in space for an open look at the cage.

THIRD QUARTER
Devin SpencerBen Spencer's younger brother – earned his first collegiate goal with 9:09 to play in the half as Massachusetts went in front, 9-5. Trainor sent a ball toward the center of the crease as Devin Spencer moved in front of the cage. The ball deflected off of Devin Spencer's stick in front and landed in the back of the cage for the rookie attackman's first goal.

Bianchin followed with a man-up goal with 4:30 to go before Leung scored on a pass by Noah Rak seven seconds later for an 11-5 lead heading to the fourth.

FOURTH QUARTER
Jake Lisauskas made it eight-straight UMass tallies 54 seconds into the final stanza with his fourth goal of the year.

Drexel broke out of its offense slump with consecutive scores from Frazee, Chris Friedman and Jeremy Omrod. Friedman's strike brought Drexel back within 12-8 at the 7:52 mark; however, the UMass defense regained its composure and held the Dragons without another goal the remainder of the way.

Ben Spencer produced his second of the game with 4:54 left before Leung netted his fifth of the day with 99 seconds to play.
