Burnett Powers Women's Lax Comeback Over George Mason, 18-17

April 23, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse

Minutewomen claim A-10 regular-season title, top spot in league tournament.

AMHERST, Mass. - Hannah Burnett tied the UMass single-game record with eight goals, including five in the second half, to guide the UMass women's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 18-17 victory over George Mason on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. The win gives the Minutewomen the Atlantic 10 regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament in two weeks.

The Senior Day win also extended UMass' (13-3, 8-0 A-10) NCAA record to 53 consecutive league wins as the Minutewomen look to post their seventh straight unbeaten season in A-10 play in next Saturday's regular-season finale at Duquesne (12 p.m.).

Along with Burnett's performance, which tied a school record she previously set this year against Saint Joseph's, Sarah Crowley set a new single-season program record for caused turnovers with 40 on the year, while Hannah Murphy set a new single-season record in draw controls with 155. Murphy held the previous record with 152 set last year. The senior All-American now has 465 for her career which ranks sixth all-time in NCAA history.

Burnett finished with a game-high nine points after adding an assist to her shooting touch. Holly Turner added four goals and two assists, while Cassidy Doster scored a goal and recorded three assists. Murphy finished the day with 15 draw controls to go with a goal, two assists, five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Crowley led the defense with three caused turnovers, a groundball and four draw controls.

In cage, Lauren Hiller made the start making three saves in 42 minutes of work. Aileen Kelly picked up her first win of the season after closing out the final 18 minutes with three saves as well.

George Mason (10-6, 6-2 A-10) was led by Alexa McGovern and Brooker Lorber who each had four goals and two assists. Chachi Kelehan added three goals as did Hailey Johnson (1 assist). Melissa Semkiw made a career-high 19 saves in goal as she faced 50 shots from the UMass offense to keep the game in the Patriots favor for much of the contest.

The Minutewomen won 22-of-37 draws, held a 23-to-12 advantage in groundballs and outshot Mason 50-to-31 for the game.

The Patriots used a quick start on the day to build momentum by jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first four minutes of play. A pair of goals from Burnett followed by Turner's first of the day cut the lead to 5-3 with 19:02 left in the first half.

UMass tied the game just under seven minutes later on a Murphy free position goal, but George Mason responded with three straight goals to take a 9-6 lead into halftime.

After the intermission, the Patriots extended the lead to 10-6 on a man-down score by Kelehan, but the Minutewomen were able to answer with goals from Kiley Anderson, Burnett and Turner to pull back within a goal.

At the 19:45 mark, Lorber pushed the Mason cushing back to four goals to cap a three-goal spurt for the Patriots. UMass was again able to tie the game at 13-13 after four scores in the next five minutes.

The Minutewomen took their first lead of the game with 12:56 to go when Abby Walker found Anderson for her 33rd goal of the year.

After George Mason re-took the lead with goals from McGovern and Johnson, Burnett scored three more times around a Turner free position goal putting the Minutewomen up 18-15 with 10:40 remaining. The Patriots scored twice in a 28 second span, but Murphy won the ensuing draw control with 1:51 left on the clock. A yellow card on Mason with 39 seconds to go allowed UMass to run out the rest of the clock after getting a possession clock reset due to the card.
