April 29, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
Minutewomen dispatch Duquesne 25-12 for 54th consecutive A-10 win.
PITTSBURGH - A school-record tying performance highlighted the regular-season finale as the UMass women's lacrosse team picked up a 25-12 win at Duquesne to complete the Minutewomen's seventh perfect season in Atlantic 10 play. The 25 goals scored tied UMass' single-game record which it set earlier this year at La Salle. The victory also extended the Minutewomen's NCAA-record league win streak to 54 consecutive contests.
Next up for UMass will be the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia. As the regular-season champion, the Minutewomen (14-3, 9-0 A-10) will be the No. 1 seed earning a bye in the quarterfinal round. The tournament is slated to run Thursday, May 4 through Sunday, May 7 with the champion earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. UMass has won eight straight league titles and nine overall. Last year, the Minutewomen reached the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 1984.
In Saturday's match-up, Hannah Murphy and Holly Turner highlighted a balanced offensive attack. Turner notched seven points on four goals and three assists, while Murphy posted a game-high five goals alongside 16 draw controls. Hannah Burnett and Kaitlyn Cerasi each notched three goals and two assists, while Callie Santos, Abby Walker and Kiley Anderson each scored two. Four other players scored in the game for the Minutewomen.
Murphy's performance in the draw circle moved her into fifth all-time in NCAA history with 481 for her career. She needs 13 more to move into fourth all-time.
Lauren Hiller made the start in goal picking up the win while making 10 saves. She was lifted for the final 20 minutes of play by Aileen Kelly who posted a pair of stops.
Kaelin Shaw and Kaitlyn DeHaven led Duquesne (2-15, 0-9 A-10) with three goals each followed by Jill Vacanti who had two. Emily McMinimee made 13 saves in goal for the Dukes.
UMass held a 48-to-31 shot advantage and won 26-of-39 draw controls.
The Minutewomen scored the opening goal of the game off a Murphy draw win with Cerasi finding the back of the next just 11 seconds into play. UMass scored six of the next seven goals in the first six minutes of action to go up 7-1. Sarah Crowley, Anderson and Walker closed the first half with three goals in a span of 50 seconds as UMass took a 15-8 lead into halftime. The game was actually delayed approximately 40 minutes after Walker's goal with 51 seconds due to lightning in the area.
The second half opened with a five-goal burst from UMass in the first three minutes putting the Minutewomen up 20-8. With 3:44 left in the game, Ashley Faulhaber potted the record-tying score.
