Santos Nets Overtime Winner As Women's Lax Bests UConn 10-9

Senior scores with 16 seconds remaining in first half of overtime stanza.

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior attack Callie Santos buried the game-winning overtime goal leading the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Connecticut on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. Santos took a feed from fellow senior Hannah Murphy to score with 16 seconds remaining in the first half of the overtime staza as the Minutewomen improved to 2-3 overall.

The match saw both teams use big runs with UMass scoring six straight in the first half jumping out to a 7-2 lead midway through. The Huskies (2-3) then scored seven of the next eight goals to take a 9-8 lead with 5:21 left in regulation. Hannah Burnett then tied the game with 3:39 to force the overtime dramatics.

Burnett finished the day with a game-high four goals, while Santos had two goals and an assist for the Minutewomen. Hannah Murphy had a goal, two assists, eight draw controls and four groundballs. Holly Turner had a goal and an assist, while Abby Walker rounded out the scorers with a goal. Defensively, Allison Ryan had four caused turnovers and seven groundballs while goalie Lauren Hiller earned the win with 10 saves.

UConn was led by three goals from Maggie Tripodi and three assists from Grace Nolan who also had four caused turnovers. Jacqueline Jordan scored a pair of goals while four other Huskies had a goal each. Grace Beshlian made 13 saves in the loss.

Burnett opened the scoring just over six minutes into the game off a feed from Kaitlyn Cerasi. After UConn scored the next two taking a 2-1 lead at the 17:48 mark. UMass then went on a quick six-goal run in just over four minutes as draw control wins were translated into goals. Murphy scored the opening goal of the run, while Burnett capped it with back-to-back goals sepearated by 19 seconds at the 13:10 mark of the first half.

Th Huskies were able to close the half with goals from Kelsey Catalano and Molly O'Reilly cutting the UMass lead to 7-4 at halftime.

UConn continued to gain momentum in the second half. The teams traded goals to start the stanza before the Huskies were able to string together four straight goals with alternating scores from Jordan and Tripodi. UConn tied the game at 8-8 with 10:52 to go and then took the lead nearly five minutes later on Tripodi's third of the day.

After Burnett tied the game, UMass had a chance in the final seconds to win in regulation. An Abby Walker shot from just in front of the crease was saved, but the ball deflected into the stick of Burnett whose follow-up shot went high with four seconds to go.

The Huskies won the opening draw of overtime, but a save by Hiller along with several caused turnovers by the defense gave the Minutewomen the chance to earn the win. With 41 seconds left in the first half of overtime, UMass called timeout to set up its scoring play. Murphy found a cutting Santos whose shot beat Beshlian for the game-winning goal.

The Minutewomen held a big edge in draw controls winning 14-of-20 for the game, but the Huskies won 3-of-7 in the second half to spur their run to overcome the early deficit. UMass also held a 30-to-25 shot advantage while both teams scooped up 29 groundballs. Free-position shots were a difference maker in the contest as UMass converted 3-of-5 and UConn was 0-for-5.

UMass will return to action on Thursday, March 10 at New Hampshire. The opening draw is set for 2 p.m.
