Boston College Hands Women's Lax 18-10 Loss in Season-Opener

No. 17 Eagles use seven-goal run in win over No. 16 Minutewomen.
AMHERST, Mass. - A seven-goal run bridging the first and second halves proved the difference maker as No. 17 Boston College defeated the No. 16 UMass women's lacrosse team 18-10 on Wednesday afternoon. Kate Weeks led the Eagles with eight goals in the game and Boston College won 22-of-30 draw controls to control the bulk of the possession.
RECORDS:
The loss drops UMass to 0-1, while the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the year. The loss snapped a 22-game home win streak for the Minutewomen which stood as the fourth longest in NCAA history.
UMASS LEADERS:
The Minutewomen were led offensively by four goals and an assist from Holly Turner, while Hannah Murphy and Cassidy Doster each added a pair of goals. Callie Santos notched a goal and Hannah Palau tallied three points on a goal and two assists. Lauren Hiller earned the start in goal making nine saves in her first collegiate appearance. Allison Ryan led the defense with three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
BOSTON COLLEGE LEADERS:
Boston College was led by the eight goals from Weeks and a game-high 10 points on three goals and seven assists by Sam Apuzzo. Tess Chandler rounded out the top offensive performers with two goals and an assist. Zoe Ochoa played the first half making five saves and allowing four goals to earn the win. She was replaced by Lauren Daly in the second half where she made two saves and allowed six goals.

KEY MOMENTS:
- After BC scored the opening goal of the game, UMass reeled off four straight taking a 4-1 lead with 17:15 left after Turner scored twice along with goals from Palau and Murphy.
- From there, the Eagles were able to respond with six straight goals. Boston College was able to tie the game 4-4 on a Chandler goal at the 5:56 mark. The Eagles tacked on another goal 28 second later to re-take the lead. BC made it a two goal margin with a quick strike just before halftime.
- The second half started with two more Boston College goals before Turner could stem the tide with her third of the game at the 26:05 mark. The Eagles answered with a flurry of four straight to go back up 12-5.
- Doster and Murphy then scored back-to-back goals for UMass making it a 12-7 Eagles lead with 17:05 remaining, but the Minutewomen were unable to cut the deficit in the balance of the game.
