Three-goal run in second half proves difference maker for Buffs.

DeLAND, Fla. - A three-goal spurt in the second half for Colorado proved the difference-maker as the Buffalos defeated the No. 16 UMass women's lacrosse team 11-7 on Friday afternoon at Stetson University in a neutral site match-up. After UMass tied the game 5-5 to start the second half, the three-goal swing helped put the Buffs ahead for the balance of the match.

The loss drops the Minutewomen to 0-2 on the year as UMass remains in Florida for the weekend to take on Jacksonville this Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. The Buffalos improve to 2-0 on the year with today's win coming after an overtime victory against Northwestern to start the year.

UMass was led by three goals from Hannah Burnett, two goals from Hannah Murphy and a goal and three assists from Holly Turner. Murphy also had a game-high seven draw controls. Goalie Lauren Hiller made the start in cage with 10 saves.

Colorado received four goals from Darby Kiernan who also had an assist for a game-best five points. Johnna Fusco tallied three goals while Miranda Stinson had a goal and an assist. Paige Soenksen made eight saves in goal for the win.

Despite UMass winning 12-of-20 draw controls, turnovers helped Colorado's cause in the win. The Minutewomen had 17 miscues in the game compared to nine for the Buffs. Colorado translated the extra possessions into a 35-to-24 advantage in shots.

The Minutewomen jumped out to an early 2-0 lead to start the first six minutes of play with goals from Murphy and Turner. Colorado responded with five straight goals before Burnett was able to score with 11 seconds remaining in the first half cutting the deficit to 5-3 at the intermission.

Abby Walker and Murphy scored back-to-back goals separated by 14 seconds to start the second half tying the game 5-5 in the first minute of play.

Colorado then scored three straight taking an 8-5 lead with 22:34 left in the second half. Burnett then made it a two point game off a feed from Turner with 21:08 to go, but the Buffs responded with another pair of goals over the next 10 minutes. Burnett netted her third of the game at the 7:41 mark, but UMass was able to generate just two more shots from that point with Soenksen making saves on both attempts to hold the Minutewomen at bay.
