Women's Lacrosse Rallies for 14-13 Win at Jacksonville

Minutewomen overcome early five goal deficit to pick up win.

Jacksonville, Fla. - A big second half in the draw circle proved the difference maker as the No. 16 UMass lacrosse team rallied from a five-goal deficit to defeat Jacksonville 14-13 on Sunday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field. The Minutewomen won 12-of-16 second half draw controls which translated to nine goals in the come-from-behind win.

Sunday's contest was the first time the Maroon and White faced the Dolphins since the two programs met in the 2015 NCAA Tournament First Round with UMass winning, 13-8.
 
The victory gives the Minutewomen their first win of the season improving to 1-2 on the year. UMass travels back north to face Syracuse on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. The Dolphins fall to 0-2 on the year with today's loss coming after a 13-12 loss to Ohio State.
 
UMass was led offensively by Hannah Murphy and Kaitlyn Cerasi who each had three goals. Cerasi added two assists, while Murphy had a game-high 11 draw controls. Cassidy Doster, Callie Santos, and Holly Turner each tallied a pair of goals. Goalie Lauren Hiller made the start for the Minutewomen in net and had nine saves.
 
The Dolphins were led by Ashtyn Hiron who had five goals for Jacksonville followed by two from Courtney Valdez, Amelia Pedwell and Rachel Aus. Mariah Cudlipp made 14 saves in cage for the Dolphins.
 
Jacksonville opened the game on a 5-0 run with five different players scoring. UMass then had a run of its own where the Minutewomen were able to cut the Dolphins lead to 6-5 at the intermission. The Minutewomen capped the first half with three straight goals including one from Santos just before the halftime buzzer.
 
The second half saw both of the traditionally high-powered offenses trading goals. The Maroon and White tied the game at 7-7 with just under 24 minutes remaining in the game. That was followed by two quick Dolphins' goals and then two Minutewomen goals to make it 9-9.
 
The game continued with back and forth action when the Dolphins took a 10-9 lead. Murphy tied the game a 10 on an unassisted goal at the 13:05 mark. Santos gave UMass its first lead of the game with her second goal the day just over a minute later. After the game was tied again at 11, Murphy and Turner then scored back-to-back goals putting the Minutewomen ahead for the rest of the game. .
 
UMass outshot Jacksonville 32-to-24 for the game and held a 16-to-11 edge in draw controls sparked by the second half performance. The Minutewomen also converted 5-of-7 free position attempts, while Jacksonville was 2-of-5 at the 8-meter arc.
