Men’s Soccer Set To Face VCU In Atlantic 10 Championship Game

The Minutemen will take on VCU tomorrow at noon in their first title game since 2008.
DAYTON, Ohio – The top-seeded University of Massachusetts men's soccer team will face No. 2-seed VCU in the Atlantic 10 Championship match tomorrow afternoon at noon at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. The Minutemen (14-3-3 Overall) advanced to their first title match since 2008 with an overtime win over No. 5-seed and defending tournament champion Fordham on Friday on a Konrad Gorich goal in the 95th-minute to send UMass through.
Gorich's game-winning goal was his third of the year while Davis Smith picked up his sixth assist to tie him with Alex DeSantis for the team lead. Smith leads UMass in goals scored this season with nine while DeSantis has added eight to go along with six from Jack Fulton.
UMass heads into the match having won six of their last seven matches outright while posting a 20-6-5 record in their last 31 matches dating back to Sept. 24, 2016. Though two league tournament matches, the Minutemen have posted two shutouts led by goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia's five saves, who picked up his second assist of the season on the game-winning goal on Friday. UMass is tied with their opponents in shots with 21 each through the two contests and held the Rams without a shot until 1:09 left in the first half on Friday.
Sunday's championship match marks the first meeting between UMass and VCU this season in a series that the Minutemen trail 1-2-1, with UMass coming out on top 1-0 in overtime during the regular season matchup in 2016 before falling to the Rams 2-1 in overtime last season in the quarterfinal matchup of the A-10 Tournament.
The winner of the championship match will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the first-round match scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16.
