November 12, 2017 | Men's Soccer
UMass netted three second-half goals as they secured the third A-10 Tournament title in program history.
DAYTON, Ohio – The top-seeded University of Massachusetts men's soccer team netted three goals in the final half on Sunday as they defeated No. 2-seed VCU 3-1 to win their third Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship in program history while securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The championship marks the first since 2007 and the second time that the Minutemen (15-3-3 Overall) have won both the regular season and tournament titles in the same season.
Both UMass and VCU (12-6 Overall) put two shots on goal out of five attempts in a scoreless first half before both offenses found their groove in the second half of the match.
Matthew Mooney opened up the scoring in the 55th-minute with his second goal of the year as Konrad Gorich headed a ball across net to the left side after a misplayed VCU clear, finding Mooney who controlled it with his first touch before sending it past the keeper to put UMass ahead 1-0.
VCU's Francesco Amorosino scored the equalizer in the 70th-minute to tie things up at 1-1 with the Rams' lone goal of the afternoon.
UMass bounced back with a goal by Davis Smith just under seven minutes later in what would be the game-winning score. Smith dished a pass near the top of the box to Mooney on the left side of the field, who sent a cross in front of net to Smith who finished for his 10th goal of the year to put the Minutemen ahead 2-1.
Alex DeSantis capped off the match with the third goal of the afternoon for UMass, finishing from at the top of the box off a dish from Smith for the final goal that brought the score to 3-1.
Bardia Asefnia had four saves on the afternoon, including one in the 87th-minute to deny VCU's Ulrik Edvarsen a late goal.
Mooney was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player while Konrad Gorich, Brandon Merklin, Asefnia and Smith were all named to the A-10 All-Tournament Team.
UMass will learn their opponent and date of play for the NCAA Tournament during the selection show tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
