November 10, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Konrad Gorich scored in the 95th-minute to send the Minutemen to their first title match since 2008.
DAYTON, Ohio – Konrad Gorich scored his third goal of the season just over four minutes into the first overtime period as the top-seeded University of Massachusetts men's soccer team defeated No. 5-seeded Fordham 1-0 to advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship game on Sunday evening in Dayton. The Minutemen (14-3-3 Overall) will take on the winner between No. 2-seed VCU in their first conference championship game since 2008.
The UMass defense held form throughout the first half in the final third of the field, holding Fordham (12-5-2 Overall) without a shot until the 1:09 mark in the first half.
UMass had their chances in the match as Alex DeSantis attempted three shots, including one on goal with 7:25 in the first half that was saved by Fordham keeper Rashid Nuhu. Jack Fulton attempted four shots and put one on goal while Gorich put two on target. The Minutemen out-shot the Rams 12-9 in the defensive contest.
Fordham looked to have the opening goal in the 85th-minute but after a short discussion, the officials ruled the play offside and took the goal away as the match remained scoreless.
Gorich's game-winning goal came on a free kick from UMass goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia and was headed on to Gorich by Davis Smith. Gorich took the pass and finished from four-yards out to beat the keeper and secure a UMass win.
The championship game of the A-10 Tournament will be played on Sunday afternoon at noon at Baujan Field.
