October 21, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Alex DeSantis’ penalty kick in the 83rd minute secured a 3-2 road win for the Minutemen
DAYTON, Ohio –University of Massachusetts men's soccer team held onto first-place in the Atlantic 10 as they defeated the second-place Dayton Flyers 3-2 on the road at Baujan Field on Saturday evening. Alex DeSantis helped extended the Minutemen's (11-2-3 Overall, 5-0-1 A-10) unbeaten streak to 10 straight matches, converting on a penalty kick in the 83rd-minute to secure the win.
Dayton (7-7-2 Overall, 4-2-0 A-10) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth-minute after a late whistle led to a Flyer penalty kick that Rok Taneski put in the far-right side of the net for the goal.
The UMass offense turned up the attacking pressure the rest of the way, putting nine of their 17 shots on net led by four shots from Davis Smith and three each from DeSantis, Jack Fulton and Matthew Mooney.
Smith converted on one of his attempts in the 26th minute to tie the game up with his eighth goal of the year, heading the ball over an out of position goalkeeper off an assist from Fulton to bring the score to 1-1.
Samuel Asamoah provided the Minutemen a 2-1 lead with a score in the 51st-minute as the junior split a pair of defenders near the edge of the box before sliding a shot past another defender and the Dayton keeper for his fourth goal of the season.
Takeski picked up his second goal for the Flyers in the 64th minute to tie things up at 2-2.
UMass responded once again as DeSantis headed a ball on net just over a minute later off a corner from Fulton that was turned away. Mooney had a good look on net in the 71st-minute, sending a shot that was cleared out for a corner kick.
An attack by Smith late down the stretch in the contest forced a Dayton foul, earning an 83rd-minute red card for David Lianes to set up the DeSantis penalty after he was beaten by the freshman off the dribble, putting the Dayton keeper in a one-on-one situation. DeSantis went on to convert the penalty kick for his sixth goal of the season.
UMass will have a week off before their next game as they are scheduled to face George Mason on the road on Sat., Oct. 28 in Fairfax, Va.
