October 18, 2017 | Men's Soccer

Kevin Boino scored the game-winning goal early in overtime to secure the 2-1 win at Rudd Field

AMHERST, Mass. Junior forward Kevin Boino scored his first goal of the season in overtime as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team took over sole possession of first-place in the Atlantic 10 with a 2-1 win in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. UMass (10-2-3 Overall, 4-0-1 A-10) remained unbeaten at home this season and extended their unbeaten streak to nine straight matches, matching the longest streak since 2008.

Boino's game-winning goal game just over four minutes into overtime as the junior secured the ball near the box on the left side of the field, curving the ball just over the outstretched goalkeeper and into the top right corner of the net to secure the 2-1 win.

Rhode Island (8-3-3 Overall, 3-1-1 A-10) took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd-minute as Chae Brangman got behind the Minutemen defense off a pass from Dominik Richter. The Rams led the game in shots 15-12 and put seven on goal.

Jack Fulton tied the game up at 1-1 early in the second half on a free kick after a Casey Hamill run drew a Rhode Island foul to set up the free kick just outside the box in the 52nd-minute. Fulton stepped up and curved his shot into the near corner of the net to beat the keeper and pick up his fifth goal of the season to put him at 11 points.

Bardia Asefnia tallied six saves to bring his season total to 47, including a diving save to send the ball over the net off a shot from Stavros Zarokostas in the 12th-minute to keep the Rams off the board. Asefnia recorded two saves down the stretch in regulation in the 85th and 88th-minute to keep the game knotted at 1-1 and send it into OT.

The Minutemen will be on the road for two of their final three matches of the regular season, beginning with a match against Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m. UMass will return home for Senior Day on Wed., Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. for a match against Fordham to close out the regular season.
