Men’s Soccer Hits The Road For Matchup Against Dayton

UMass takes a nine-match unbeaten streak into Dayton to face the second-place Flyers
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer team will take their nine-match unbeaten streak on the road Saturday for a matchup with another top team in the Atlantic 10 as they will take on Dayton at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field. The Minutemen (10-2-3 Overall, 4-0-1 A-10) took sole possession of first place in the league on Wednesday with a 2-1 win in overtime over Rhode Island to break the tie at the top of the standings.
The Minutemen's nine-match unbeaten streak is the best by a UMass team since the 2008 season while the 2002 team has the next longest unbeaten streak at 11 straight matches. UMass secured their first winning season since 2008 last week with a 2-0 shutout win over La Salle at home last Saturday to start their two-match home stand.
UMass remained perfect on their home field with the win over Rhode Island on Wednesday, moving their record to 9-0-1 at Rudd Field while outscoring their opponents 15-2 over the last five at home. Kevin Boino tallied the game-winning goal just over four minutes into overtime against Rhode Island, securing the ball near the box on the left side of the field before curing the ball over the goalkeeper and into the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Jack Fulton picked up the equalizing goal early in the second half on a free kick from just outside the box to extend his goal streak to three consecutive matches.
The Minutemen will matchup with Dayton (7-6-2 Overall, 4-1-0 A-10) for the 23rd time since 1995, with the Flyers owning an 11-9-2 series lead after a scoreless draw last season at Rudd Field. Dayton currently sits in second-place in the A-10 standings coming off wins over St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis with three games remaining for both squads.
UMass is outscoring their opponents this season 29-13 with Davis Smith and Alex DeSantis leading the way with seven and five goals respectively. The defense has allowed under a goal per game with a 0.87 goals against average while goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia has recorded 47 saves, including six in the win over the Rams. Asefnia and the defense has held strong on opposing corner kicks this season, keeping their opponents off the board on all 81 corner kicks.
The Minutemen will be off for a week after Saturday's game and will resume play on Sat., Oct 28 against George Mason on the road in Fairfax, Va. Before returning home to Rudd Field to take on Fordham on Senior Day on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.
