Men’s Soccer Heads To Saint Joseph’s For A-10 Road Matchup

UMass is on a four-match winning streak leading up to the match, outscoring their opponents 13-2 during the span

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts men's soccer team takes their six-match unbeaten streak on the road for an Atlantic 10 matchup against Saint Joseph's tomorrow at 7 p.m. on Sweeney Field. UMass (8-2-2 Overall, 2-0-0 A-10) enters the match having won four straight by outscoring their opponents 13-2 during the span and owns a 15-5-4 record over their last 24 games dating back to an overtime win over Hartford on Sept. 24, 2016 on the road.
 
Massachusetts is coming off a week where they picked up two wins at home, beginning with a rally from down 1-0 against Vermont last Tuesday to rally with two goals in the final 14 minutes to secure a 2-1 win over a team that qualified for the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid a season ago. Saturday's match against Duquesne was controlled by the Minutemen throughout with two goals in the opening half before a three-goal burst in the second led to a 5-0 win.
 
UMass owns a 17-6-2 all-time record against the Hawks (3-6-3 Overall, 1-1 A-10) heading into Wednesday's contest, dating back to the first meeting between the two squads in 1988 with the Minutemen's last win coming in a 2-0 home victory in 2012.
 
The Minutemen offense ranks in the top-25 nationally in multiple offensive statistics heading into the final third of the season, ranking 17th in total assists (22), 19th in total points (68) and 16th in total goals (23) while ranking in the top-25 for each of those three statistics in per game numbers.
 
Goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia anchors a UMass defense that ranks 30th nationally in total goals against average while the redshirt-senior keeper ranks 33rd in goals against average and 34th in minutes played.
 
Freshman midfielder Davis Smith, the reigning back-to-back A-10 Rookie of the Week, is currently tied for 24th nationally in points with 17 and tied for 26th in goals. Smith earned the honor after scoring three goals and adding an assist for seven points as UMass held strong on Rudd Field last week with wins over Vermont and Duquesne in the A-10 home opener.
 
As a team, UMass owns the 24th best win, loss, tie percentage in all of the NCAA with .750 and is currently ranked 33rd in the latest Rankings Power Index (RPI).
 
UMass will return home to Rudd Field on Saturday for a matchup against La Salle at 1 p.m. Admission to the home contest is free.
