UMass Picks Up Draw On The Road At Saint Joseph’s, 2-2

October 11, 2017 | Men's Soccer

Jack Fulton’s equalizer in the 85th-minute secured a draw for the Minutemen

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. University of Massachusetts men's soccer team came back from down a goal twice as they picked up a 2-2 draw on the road at Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 play on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field. UMass (8-2-3 Overall, 2-0-1 A-10) put the pressure on the Hawks (3-6-4 Overall, 1-1-1 A-10) down the stretch in the final extra time period as they outshot their competition 5-2 over the final 20 minutes of play.

Junior Jack Fulton picked up the game-tying goal that would send the match into extra time down the stretch of the second half, finishing in front of the net for his third goal of the season on an assist from Minutemen goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia near midfield to tie things up at 2-2.

UMass had to respond down a goal twice in Wednesday's contest, first after a Ben Cochran header into the back of the net for the Hawks in the 61st-minute. The Minutemen turned on the pressure and forced Saint Joseph's into an own goal that notted the match at 1-1 just under two minutes later.

The Hawks regained the lead in the 74th minute on a goal from Issac Agyapong after a rebound off the post on a shot that sailed over the outstretched arms of Asefnia, giving the home team a 2-1 advantage before Fulton's equalizer.

UMass was the aggressor in the final 20 minutes of play, beginning with a deep shot from Fulton that sailed just left of the net on the first shot of overtime in the 94th-minute as both teams had a single shot in the first 10 minutes of extra time. Fulton attempted three shots on the night with two hitting the target for shots on goal.

Henry Steincamp and Davis Smith created a few chances in the final 10 minutes, beginning with a Steinkamp ball in front of the net that just missed the foot of Mike Rita in the 101st-minute before a Smith header on one of his team-leading four shots sailed just wide right of the net two minutes later.

UMass was out-shot 18-10 on the night, but put 50-percent of their shots on target with Smith's three and Fulton's two.

The Minutemen will return home to Rudd Field on Saturday for a matchup against La Salle at 1 p.m. Admission to the contest is free.
