Men's Soccer Pitches 2-0 Shutout Over Brown

September 17, 2016 | Men's Soccer

Henry Steinkamp, Alex DeSantis score goals for Minutemen.

AMHERST, Massachusetts - First half goals from Henry Steinkamp and Alex DeSantis paved the way as the UMass men's soccer team pitched a 2-0 shutout against Brown on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. Keeper Jorge Becerra anchored the defense which held the Bears at bay for the first shutout of the season.

The win marked the first for the Minutemen this season improving the squad to 1-5-1 overall, while Brown fell to 3-2-0 overall.

Brown held a 17-to-12 shot advantage on the day, but Becerra was strong between the pipes making six saves. The defense was key with five blocked shots including three in the final four minutes of regulation.

Steinkamp put the Minutemen on the board first with a tap-in goal in the 24th minute. The junior crashed the near post on a far-field corner kick finding a loose ball after Connor O'Dwyer and Konrad Gorich each headed the ball inside the 18-yard box. Gorich knocked the ball on target where Steinkamp was able to finish for his first goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, DeSantis scored his second of the season giving the Minutemen an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

The Bears had a terrific opportunity on a blast from C.J. Mix in the 5th minute, but Becerra was able to make a five-bell diving save to keep the match scoreless early. In the 14th minute, UMass caught a second break when an apparent goal by Brown was waived off due to offsides.

In the 78th minute, Brown nearly got on the scoreboard but Tyler Long's strike glanced off the crossbar allowing the Minutemen to maintain the two-goal lead.

The Bears peppered the UMass defense in the final four minutes, but the back four stood tall blocking three shots and holding strong on a pair of corner kicks.

Brown keeper Erik Hanson made three saves in the match.

The Minutemen will take to the road for a pair of matches next week playing at Vermont on Wednesday, Sept. 21 (7 p.m.) and then at Hartford on Saturday, Sept. 24 (7 p.m.).
