Rally Falls Short as Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision at No. 20 Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vermont - Despite falling behind by three goals early in the first half, the UMass men's soccer team rallied before intermission but could not find the equalizer in a 3-2 loss at No. 20 Vermont on Wednesday night at Virtue Field.
The win improved Vermont to 8-1-0, while UMass fell to 1-6-1 overall. The Minutemen will return to action on Saturday night (7 p.m.) at Hartford to close out its two-match road trip this week.
The Catamounts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. In the 5th minute, Vermont's Charlie DeFeo poked home a loose ball inside the six-yard box after a deep throw-in from the far sideline. Six minutes later, Brian Wright put UVM up 2-0 after Bernard Yeboah lofted a deep pass from the midfield catching Wright in stride.
Vermont pushed the lead to 3-0 when Stefan Lamanna scored in the 24th minute.
UMass continued pushing, however, when Andrew Barrowman and Mark Dunphy each scored in the balance of the first half. Barrowman notched his first collegiate goal in the 26th minute. Dunphy, whose goal was also the first of his collegiate career, made it a 3-2 match in the 42nd minute when he headed home an Alex DeSantis corner kick through traffic.
For the match, Vermont held a 14-to-5 shot advantage, while UMass held a 6-to-5 edge in corner kicks.
Jorge Becerra made six saves in net for the Minutemen, while Eric Venezia made two saves in 60 minutes of work. Venezia was lifted in favor of Aron Runarsson for the final 30 minutes of the match.
