Softball Seeded Third for Atlantic 10 Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the seedings for its upcoming 2016 league championship on Sunday afternoon with the University of Massachusetts softball program placed at No. 3 for the four-day event. The Minutewomen drew No. 6 seed and tournament host George Washington for their opening game, a Wed., May 11 contest at 2:30 p.m.
The six-team, double-elimination championship will conclude Sat., May 14 with the winner claiming the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The semifinals and finals will air live on American Sports Network (ASN).
Massachusetts finished at 15-6 overall in league play, it's best mark during third-year head coach Kristi Stefanoni's tenure. Fordham is the top seed while Dayton, which the Minutewomen swept during the final regular season series of this season. The Rams and Flyers each earned a bye into the second round with their No. 1 and No. 2 seedings.
Saint Louis (No. 4 seed) and Saint Joseph's (No. 5) square off in the first game of the tournament. The winners of UMass-George Washington and Saint Louis-Saint Joseph's earn outright spots in Thursday's round against Dayton and Fordham, respectively. The losers will meet in a second game on Wednesday, with the victor moving on to the second round.
Wednesday's first round games and Thursday's second round will be streamed for free on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
Tickets for the championship begin at $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and students.
