Minutewomen Blank Dayton In Doubleheader

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts softball celebrated Senior Day by shutting out Dayton, 4-0 and 7-0 in both ends of the squads' Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sortino Field. The pair of victories moves the Minutewomen to 23-22 overall and 14-6 in A-10 play, while the Flyers drop to 26-18-1 on the season and 14-4-1 in the A-10.
Meg Colleran (19-15) and Taylor Carbone (4-6) both picked up shutout wins for UMass in the circle. Colleran worked all seven innings in game one and limited Dayton to just six hits, all singles, with no walks and three strikeouts. Carbone scattered six hits over seven innings in game two and walked two batters.
The Minutewomen opened the scoring in game one with an RBI double by Lindsey Zenk in the bottom of the second that scored Kaycee Carbone.
UMass followed up by plating three more the next inning thanks to a two-run double from Jena Cozza, who then scored on a single up the middle from Taylor Carbone.
In the bottom of the first in game two, the Minutewomen took advantage of a Dayton error with Cozza scoring from second after reaching with her second double of the afternoon. Kaycee Carbone then increased the lead to 2-0 with a one-out single up the middle that brought in Taylor Carbone.
Cozza added another run for UMass, leading off the third with a home run to center. The next inning, a bases-loaded walk to Taylor Carbone forced in Olivia Godin.
The Minutewomen capped off the 7-0 victory by scoring three runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth. Tara Klee picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly and Kaycee Carbone drove in Taylor Carbone with a double to left center, reaching base for the sixth time in the doubleheader.
UMass and Dayton will close out the regular season tomorrow, May 8, with game three of the teams' weekend series slated to begin at noon at Sortino Field.
