Scouting Albany Men's Lacrosse
Albany and UMass continue their yearly series with a Tues., March 8 meeting between the squads at Garber Field. The Great Danes claimed victory in each of the last three meetings after the sides split the opening 12 matchups evenly at six apiece.
Seth Oakes provides power up front on attack with 10 goals and four assists for 14 points through three games, including wins over Cornell, 12-8 and Drexel, 20-14 and a 16-7 loss at No. 6 Syracuse. Last season, Oakes ranked third in the America East Conference and sixth nationally with 3.18 goals per game (54). Connor Fields is second on the team with 11 points via five goals and six assists.
Blaze Riorden returns between the pipes for his senior season one year removed from being America East All-Conference First Team at goalie. The Fairport, N.Y., native is in his fourth season as a starter with 58 career appearances and starts.
Last time these teams met, time ran out on an improbable UMass comeback. Down 10-6 with nine minutes remaining in the game, the Minutemen scored three consecutive goals to pull within one. After Brendan Hegarty made it 10-9 with eight seconds to play, Noah Rak won the ensuing faceoff and Ryan Izzo scooped up the groundball, but the Minutemen were unable to put a shot in to tie the game before time expired on the John Fallon Field scoreboard.
Massachusetts and Albany share a common connection in UMass assistant coach Craig McDonald, who played for the Great Danes and helped the team to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances as a close defenseman from 2005-08.

Dick Garber Chosen For IMLCA Hall Of Fame
Former University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse head coach Dick Garber was announced as a member of the inaugural Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame class. Garber, who guided the Minutemen to 300 wins as the program leader from 1955-90, was one of 11 chosen for enshrinement.
Garber led UMass to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and 13 New England Championships during his 36 seasons in Amherst, where he compiled a 300-142-3 record. He coached 80 all-Americans, 105 all-New England selections and 40 North-South Game participants. Garber was a three-time USILA Coach of the Year (1969, 1976 and 1989) and 14-time New England Coach of the Year.
UMass To Debut Refurbished Garber Field Versus Ohio State
UMass men's lacrosse showcased its refurbished Garber Field for the first time with the upset win over No. 11 Ohio State. Between the end of the 2015 season and the beginning of the Fall, the old AstroTurf surface was replaced with a state-of-the-art FieldTurf system. It is the same FieldTurf that is featured on the Baltimore Ravens' home facility as well as the Loyola (Md.) lacrosse stadium.
Carr Finds Next Scoring Gear On Attack
Buddy Carr notched 10 points on six goals and four assists during 15 appearances as a freshman in 2015. Through five games of his sophomore season, Carr owns a team-high 13 points via 10 goals and three assists.
He followed up a career-best five-point day against No. 11 Ohio State (four goals, one assist) with his second career hat trick when he had three goals versus No. 14 Harvard. Carr added a three-point game versus Hartford (two goals, one assist), which gave Carr three performances with at least three points in 2016 after he only had one such showing in 2015.
Porzelt Named CAA Co-Player of the Week
Senior close defenseman Kevin Porzelt took home Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week as he spearheaded the defensive effort that netted UMass a 16-9 upset of No. 11 Ohio State on Sat., Feb. 20. Porzelt finished the game with seven groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. He was the first close defenseman with at least seven groundballs since Jack Reid provided eight against Yale on April 17, 2004. He is the first UMass close defenseman to take home CAA Player of the Week.
