March 04, 2016 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. - University of Massachusetts softball split the opening two games of the Red and Blue Classic on Friday in Oxford, Miss.
Game One
Senior Taylor Carbone had a two-run double in the third inning, but the University of Massachusetts softball team fell to the Belmont University Bruins, 7-3.
Belmont got out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Bruins scored five runs on just four hits, the big blow coming when Hayley Baker delivered a two-run single with no outs.
Sophomore Meg Colleran came in to pitch after the first inning and kept the Belmont bats cool. Colleran threw five innings and allowed just two runs, only one earned.
Freshman Erin Stacevicz had the first three-hit game of her career in the loss. Fellow freshman Kaycee Carbone and redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza also recorded two hits each.
Taylor Carbone earned the loss, allowing four earned runs in the first inning and falls to 1-2 on the season.
Game Two
Colleran threw her second complete-game shutout of the season as UMass topped Penn State, 3-0 in the second game of the double-header.
The UMass offense had just four hits, but it was enough as they took down the Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon.
The Minutewomen got on the board in the first inning. Cozza led off the inning with a single and Stacevicz followed with a walk. With one out, senior Taylor Carbone singled to right field scoring the two runners. Carbone would later score on a wild pitch.
The Nittany Lions would threaten in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two outs. Colleran would get Lexi Knief to groundout, ending the Penn State threat.
With the win, UMass moves to 3-7 on the season. Penn State drops to 7-8 with the loss.
UMass is back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday when it meets up again with Belmont in the Red and Blue Classic. After the completion of that game, they battle the host team, Ole Miss, for the first time in program history.
