No. 5 Providence Skates Past UMass, 6-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Three power-play goals helped carry No. 5 Providence past University of Massachusetts hockey, 6-0 on Saturday night in the teams' regular season finale at Schneider Arena. Following the setback, the Minutemen are 8-22-4 overall, 2-16-4 in Hockey East, while the Friars improve to 25-5-4 on the year and 16-3-3 in league action.
Providence opened the scoring 5:58 into the first period as Mark Jankowski backhanded home a rebound from Erik Foley and Anthony Florentino to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
Moments after a penalty expired, Providence pushed the advantage to 2-0 at the 12:09 mark. Trevor Mingoia's one-timer from the high slot found its way past Alex Wakaluk with Jankowski and John Gilmour earning assists on the play.
Gilmour then converted with the man advantage at 12:57 off a feed from Gilmour and Josh Monk to increase the margin to 3-0.
Two more power-play goals from Monk and Mingoia on a five-minute power play helped Providence break the game open early in the second period. Jankowski then added the Friars' sixth tally of the night 7:49 into the stanza.
The Friars finished the contest with a 41-23 shot advantage and went 3-for-6 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-2. Wakaluk totaled 12 saves over 25:04 and freshman Nic Renyard played the remaining 34:56, turning aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Nick Ellis, Hayden Hawkey and Brendan Leahy split time in net for Providence, combining for 23 saves.
UMass will return to action next weekend when the squad will travel to Boston University to face the Terriers in a Hockey East Tournament first round best-of-three series.
