Defenseman Mathieu Taillefer Joins Massachusetts Hockey For 2026-27

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey will welcome 6-2, 194-pound right shot defenseman Mathieu Taillefer as a part of its incoming class for 2026-27. The Richelieu, Quebec, native is the fifth new addition for next season's roster, joining forwards Max Curran, Maxim Massé and Melvin Novotny and defenseman Barrett Dexheimer.

"Mathieu is known for his steady two-way presence and reliable play on the blue line," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "This past season Mathieu played for Halifax (QMJHL), where he was captain, as well as playing for Blainville (QMJHL).  Mathieu and his experience will provide leadership, composure, and consistency to the group next season and beyond."

In his two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Taillefer totaled 23 points on two goals and 21 assists over 100 career games.

He previously spent two years with the Brooks Bandits playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). While in Brooks, Taillefer recorded 27 points on five goals and 22 assists. In 2023-24 he won gold with the Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge.
