Softball Drops Both Ends of Season-Opening Doubleheader

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite a four-run third inning in the second game of its season-opening doubleheader, the Massachusetts Minutewomen softball team dropped both games at the Phillips Softball Complex in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday afternoon. Game one of the day pitted UMass against Charlotte, while head coach Kristi Stefanoni's team took on Toledo in game two.

Game One

The University of Massachusetts softball team fell to Charlotte in the first of its two games on Saturday by a score of 7-1 at Phillips Field.

The lone UMass run came in the second inning, when Ashton Wince scored on a passed ball. Wince walked to start the second inning and moved to third base on a double by Tara Klee.

Meg Colleran earned the start for UMass and racked up four strikeouts. Colleran went six innings and allowed seven runs, six earned.

Kaitlyn Stavinoha, Jena Cozza, Taylor Carbone and Klee each recorded hits for the Minutewomen in the game. For Stavinoha, the hit marked the first of her career.

The 49ers had two players each with two RBI in the game. Haley Pace, Grace Beatty and Erin Powers each drove in multiple runs in the contest.

Game Two

The Massachusetts Minutewomen dropped the second game of Saturday's doubleheader by a score of 5-4 to the Toledo Rockets at Phillips Softball Complex in Charlotte, N.C.

Toledo took a 1-0 lead after the first inning when Celeste Fidge singled to left field scoring Ashley Rausch.

The UMass offense got on the board in the third inning, when they plated four runs against Toledo's Marla Gooding. Kaitlyn Stavinoha tripled down the right field line, scoring Dana Barclay to tie the game up at one. Later in the inning, Jena Cozza singled home Stavinoha and Taylor Carbone would follow up with an RBI single of her own. The scoring ended when Ashton Wince doubled to the left-centerfield gap, scoring Carbone.

After adding two runs in the top half of the fourth, the Rockets scored the tying and go-ahead run in the seventh runs on a Ashley Maynard single into right field that was misplayed.

Meg Colleran threw all seven innings, but was pegged with the loss despite allowing just three earned runs. The sophomore forced 14 groundouts and struck out three in her complete game effort.

The Minutewomen continue the First Pitch Classic in the first game of the day on Sunday when they take on Youngstown State in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.
