UNH Skates Past Hockey, 6-2

November 18, 2016 | Hockey

THE BASICS:
RESULT: New Hampshire 6, Massachusetts 2
LOCATION: Whittemore Center (Durham, N.H.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (3-6-1, 1-4-1 HEA); New Hampshire (5-5-2, 3-1-1 HEA)

THE LEAD: University of Massachusetts hockey matched New Hampshire, goal-for-goal in the first period, but the Wildcats scored three times in the second as the Minutemen fell to the Wildcats, 6-2 on Friday evening at the Whittemore Center. UNH was bolstered by a five-point effort from Tyler Kelleher, who factored in the final five tallies of the night for the Wildcats.

FIRST PERIOD:
New Hampshire opened the scoring just 1:41 into the contest with Patrick Grasso putting the puck home off an offensive zone draw. At the 13:03 mark, sophomore Ivan Chukarov tied the score at 1-1, blasting a shot from the right point after receiving a feed from junior Dominic Trento and freshman Jake McLaughlin. Jason Salvaggio answered for the Wildcats to regain the lead 16:26 into the period as his strike from the high slot brought the score to 2-1. Then with less than two minutes to go in the frame, sophomore Austin Plevy pulled the Minutemen level once more. Sophomore Ryan Badger caused a UNH turnover in the neutral zone and sent a pass ahead to classmate Kurt Keats. Keats found Plevy with a cross-ice pass that Plevy finished off into an open net at the 18:01 mark.

SECOND PERIOD:
Salvaggio gave the Wildcats the lead for good 5:08 into the second period, tucking the puck inside the near post after it caromed off the glass behind the net. Michael McNicholas and Kelleher made quick work of power-play opportunities at 7:26 and 14:02, respectively, to expand the advantage to 5-2.

THIRD PERIOD:
Jamie Hill added the sixth and final tally of the night 2:56 into the third, tucking a puck underneath senior goaltender Alex Wakaluk on the rush. Wakaluk, making his season debut, played the final period for the Minutemen and stopped four shots.
