Hockey Blanks Colorado College for Coach Carvel’s First UMass Win

Wischow posts shutout with 31 saves in collegiate debut.

THE LEAD: Greg Carvel secured his first win as UMass head coach as the University of Massachusetts hockey team blanked Colorado College, 3-0 in the teams' 2016-17 season opener at the Mullins Center on Friday evening. Eight different Minutemen registered points in the contest, while freshman goaltender Ryan Wischow posted a shutout with 31 saves in his collegiate debut to propel UMass to the victory.
FIRST PERIOD:
UMass was out-shot, 12-4 in a scoreless first that saw the Minutemen go shorthanded on three occasions, but Wischow turned aside all 12 attempts as the Tigers went 0-for-3 on the power play in the frame. Sophomore Kurt Keats had UMass' best scoring chance of the period, with a partial breakaway around the 12-minute mark, but had the puck bounce off his stick at the doorstep.
SECOND PERIOD:
Midway through the second period, freshman Jonny Lazarus broke up the 0-0 deadlock, pocketing his first goal of his career at 11:03 on the power play. Junior Patrick Lee found Lazarus for a quick wrister from the right faceoff circle, while classmate Dominic Trento earned an assist on the play, as well.
THIRD PERIOD:
Junior Anthony Petrella gave UMass some insurance early in the third, cleaning up a loose puck in the slot 2:08 into the stanza after freshman Griff Jeszka threw a shot towards the net. Sophomore William Lagesson later added the third and final tally for the Minutemen at 12:25. Lagesson's attempt skipped past Colorado College netminder Alex Lecerc off a pass from senior Ray Pigozzi and sophomore Austin Plevy.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Eight Minutemen combined for the teams eight points on the night, including Lazarus' first career goal and Jeszka's first career point courtesy of an assist.
- Wischow finished with 31 saves, including 14 stops in the third period to log his first career shutout in his collegiate debut.
