THE LEAD: Unable to overcome an early 3-0 deficit, the University of Massachusetts hockey team dropped the second game of its weekend series to Colorado College, 7-4 on Saturday at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen pulled within one with just under eight minutes to play in the third period, but the Tigers sealed their victory with two goals late in the frame.

FIRST PERIOD:
Colorado College scored three times in the first 7:15 of the contest, including two from Branden Makara, to build a 3-0 lead and chase UMass goaltender Ryan Wischow from the net. The Minutemen took one of the goals back at the 9:39 mark as senior Steven Iacobellis batted in a rebound from junior Patrick Lee and Shane Bear. However, the Tigers managed to push the margin back to three before the end of the frame with a power-play tally from Cole Josefchak at 18:34.

SECOND PERIOD:
UMass inched closer in the second period as senior Ray Pigozzi's power-play goal from sophomores Austin Plevy and Nic Renyard tucked under the crossbar at the 3:03 mark to bring the score to 4-2. Bryce Van Horn's delayed penalty tally stretched Colorado College's cushion back to three at 4:35, but the Minutemen pulled back within striking distance before heading to the locker room for the second intermission. Freshman Griff Jeszka tucked a puck in at the post from sophomores Kurt Keats and Ivan Chukarov 6:12 into the period to close the gap to 5-3.

THIRD PERIOD:
UMass made it a one-goal game at the 12:07 mark of the third period as freshman Jonny Lazarus ripped home his second tally in two nights from the high slot with juniors Dominic Trento and Patrick Lee earning assists on the play. However, the Tigers' Alex Berardinelli took a blocked shot the other way for a score at 17:26 and Westin Michaud picked up the empty net goal at 19:33.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Colorado College finished with a 41-18 shot advantage and was 1-for-6 on the power play, while UMass went 1-for-9 with the man advantage.
- After relieving Wischow, the starter, Renyard played the final 52:17 in net for the Minutemen and made 28 saves.
- Bear and Jeszka both registered their first collegiate points with an assist and a goal, respectively.
- Lazarus netted his second goal in as many nights and Lee logged his first multi-point game of the season. Through two games, the Lee-Trento-Lazarus line has combined for seven points (2g, 5a).
- UMass won 36 of 69 faceoffs (52.2%), paced by Jeszka's 9-for-12 (75%) night above the dots.
