Tennis Heads to ITA Regional Championships This Week

Minutewomen qualify four players for regional tournament.
AMHERST, Mass. - A program-record four Minutewomen qualified for the main draw as the UMass tennis team heads to the ITA Northeast Regional Championships this week. Ruth Crawford, Janja Kovacevic, Anna Woosley and Ana Yrazusta all earned a spot in the main draw of the tournament which begins this Thursday, Oct. 20 and runs through next Monday, Oct. 24.
The ITA Northeast Regional Championships is comprised of players representing 39 different colleges and universities in the region. The quartet of Minutewomen qualified for both the main singles draw and the main doubles draw. The regional championship will be hosted at Yale in New Haven, Conn.
This will mark just the fourth competition of the fall for UMass which is 1-0 on the year with a dual match win over Connecticut. The Minutewomen also had succesful showings in the Brown Invitational and the Yale Invitational as well.
Kovacevic leads UMass with a 6-1 record in singles play alongside Brittany Collens who is a singles play alternate for the ITA Regionals. The pair are followed by Anna Woosley who has a 5-1 record this year and is the active career leader with a 54-24 record.
Woosley will match up with Crawford in doubles play where the duo has a 5-2 record this season. Kovacevic and Yrazusta will comprise the other doubles plair entering the week with a 4-3 mark.
Yrazusta reached the Round of 16 last season in singles and doubles alongside Carol Benito. Woosley advanced out of the qualifying draw last season to reach the main draw. Woosley and Crawford reached the Round of 32 in doubles as well.
The ITA Regional Championships is the last scheduled event for the Minutewomen this fall. The season will resume on January 28 when UMass hosts Quinnipiac at the Bay Road Tennis Center.
