Box Score

BOSTON - Massachusetts held an early 1-0 lead, but five unanswered goals helped No. 11 Boston University skate past the Minutemen, 7-2, in Hockey East action on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. The setback leaves UMass at 7-10-4 on the year, 2-5-4 in league play, while the Terriers improve to 11-6-3 overall and 5-3-2 in Hockey East.

Juniors Steven Iacobellis and Ray Pigozzi registered their third and fourth multi-point games of the season, respectively for Massachusetts. Iacobellis scored his third goal of the season and second of the past three games, while contributing his 12th assist of the year to match Pigozzi for the team lead. Pigozzi’s pair of helpers pushed his total to 19 points on the season, a squad-best and new career high after logging 18 in both his freshman and sophomore campaigns.

Senior Shane Walsh netted his team-high 14th goal of the year for the Minutemen and his fifth in the past six games to keep him in the top-10 in the nation in goals.

UMass opened the scoring just 2:50 into the contest. Pigozzi collected the puck behind the net and sent it to Iacobellis at the goal line. Iacobellis’ pass across the slot found Walsh, who drove a shot into the twine.

BU answered, though, in the closing minutes of the period. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson picked up a puck that caromed off the end boards and threw it off Minutemen netminder Alex Wakaluk and in for the tally at the 17:54 mark.

The teams erupted for three goals in a one-minute, 20-second, span midway through the second period. Bobo Carpenter backhanded in a rebound from Nikolas Olsson and Doyle Somersby 12:09 into the stanza to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead.

UMass countered one minute later with Pigozzi and freshman Ivan Chukarov setting up Iacobellis who crashed the net for his second tally in the past three games, which tied the score at 2-2.

However, Matt Grzelcyk responded for BU with a shot through traffic 20 seconds following to put the Terriers on top and proceeded to log a natural hat trick, picking up his second and third tallies of the night at 17:02 of the second period and 18 ticks into the third to give the Terriers a 5-2 cushion.

Boston University capped off the scoring with two more goals, by Robbie Baillargeron at 13:07 of the third and by Jordan Greenway on a shorthanded breakaway at the 18:10 mark.

The Terriers ended the night with a 37-27 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Wakaluk had 30 saves for UMass and Sean Maguire totaled 25 stops for BU.

The Minutemen will be back in action next Fri., Jan. 15, when the squad will open a home-and-home with No. 10 UMass Lowell at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
