Saint Joseph's Sweeps UMass In Sunday Doubleheader
March 29, 2015 | Softball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Massachusetts softball team got early leads on Saint Joseph's in both games Sunday, only to see the home team get timely hits in defeating the Minutewomen at the SJU Softball Field.
Saint Joseph's completed the weekend sweep with a 10-2 win in game one and a 12-2 decision in the nightcap.
UMass (5-15, 1-5 Atlantic 10) hit three home runs on Sunday but they were all solo shots.
Quianna Diaz-Patterson raised her batting average to .500 after collecting three hits Sunday, including her fifth home run of the season when she opened the first game with a shot down the left field line. The senior from Amherst also has a .917 slugging pct. and a .569 on-base pct. this season.
After taking the 1-0 lead following Diaz-Patterson's home, the Hawks got a 2-run shot from Maddie Brunck to go ahead 2-1 before the Minutewomen tied it at 2-2 on an Olivia Godin run-scoring double, her second in as many games.
SJU got a run back in the fourth and ended the game in the fifth with seven runs after the first five batters singled to start the rally.
In the second game, freshman Gianna Hathaway belted a pair of solo shots over the wall in left for her first two collegiate round trippers, but that was all the offense UMass could produce as it finished with five hits - two from Diaz-Patterson and one from Bridget Lemire, who has hit safely in five of the last eight contests.
Hathaway's first homer gave UMass a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but SJU opened the home-half of the second with consecutive home runs by Sarah Yoos and Ashley Alden to spark a 9-run frame. The Hawks added three more in the fourth before claiming the 12-2 decision.
Saint Joseph's (19-6, 5-0) hit four homers Sunday and finished with 10 hits in each contest.
UMass' Meg Colleran (1-6) took the loss in game one and Caroline Raymond (3-9) suffered the same in game two.
UMass is scheduled to open its home slate with a five-game homestand at Sortino Field on Tuesday against Connecticut and Wednesday against Yale, with both starting at 4 p.m. The Minutewomen will welcome George Washington to town, beginning Friday at 3 p.m. and a Saturday doubleheader at Noon.
