Canisius Box Score | Iowa State Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Massachusetts softball team suffered through a second-straight day where it was unable to generate enough offense, dropping a pair of games to Canisius and Iowa State by a combined three runs at the Eddie C. Moore Complex Saturday.

UMass (4-9) fell to Canisius, 2-1, in the first game and to Iowa State, 2-0 in the second contest.

Canisius Recap

The Minutewomen got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening frame. Quianna Diaz-Patterson, who reached base in three of her four plate appearances, led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice before scoring on a Ashton Wince sac fly.

The Golden Griffins countered in the next frame, scoring in a similar manner as UMass. Alexis Roman led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt, and tied the game at 1-1 on Samantha Sharkey's triple to right.

The score stayed that way for the next five half innings until the top of the fifth.

That's when Canisius scored the go-ahead run despite only putting one ball out of the infield. Jessica Berzins led off with a single to left, reached second on an infield single and got to third on a sacrifice. She came home on a ground out to short.

Meg Colleran (1-3) took the loss after allowing both runs on nine hits while striking out four.

Iowa State Recap

In the Iowa State contest, the Cyclones took the lead in the top of the first thank to a pair of wild pitches. Brittany Gomez led off with a single to center, stole second and moved the final 90 feet on errant pitches.

ISU scored its second run in the fourth inning, loading the bases after the first two batters were retired. Jorden Spendlove scored when pinch hitter Gabby Voulgaris was hit with a 2-strike count, sending Spendlove home.

UMass, which finished with just three hits in the game, appeared ready to score in the fifth when it loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a walk. But the threat got squashed when Diaz-Patterson hit into a first base-to-catcher-to-first base double play.

Starter Caroline Raymond (2-5) struck out four and scattered eight hits while taking the loss.

UMass will conclude the weekend's action on Sunday morning when it faces LIU at 9 a.m.
