AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts softball team got a pair of big innings in each game and played great defense in sweeping a doubleheader against Dayton at Sortino Field on Saturday.
UMass (7-14, 2-2 Atlantic 10) extended its winning streak to four games and held Dayton (14-21, 2-6) - the top hitting team in the league - to just .255 over the two contests. The Minutewomen hit .314 with three home runs and made just one error in 60 chances.
Junior shortstop Quianna Diaz-Patterson was 4-for-6 with two walks and three runs as she raised her already league-high average to a season-best .438.
Freshman catcher Ashton Wince hit her first career home run - a grand slam in the game one - and had five RBI on the day.
In the circle, junior Caroline Raymond (4-7) and freshman Tara Klee (2-4) both went the distance and moved to a combined 4-0 on the week.
Game One - UMass 9, Dayton 4
Dayton scored the first two runs of the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. After manufacturing a run in the third, Jordan Jennings led off the fourth a solo home run to left.
UMass took control in the bottom of the fourth with six runs, highlighted by Wince's grand slam - the first for the Minutewomen in two seasons dating back a Tiffany Meeks shot against Dayton.
The Flyers added a run in the fifth on Tiffany Ricks' leadoff solo home run.
UMass extended its lead to 9-3 with three in the home-half of the fifth. Designated player Bridget Lemire hit her first homer of the year with a 3-run shot to center.
Kasi Vasquez doubled in Rachel Archer in the sixth for the Flyers but they didn't threaten the remainder of the game.
Raymond earned her second-consecutive victory with a complete-game, three-strikeout performance. She did walk seven and scatter eight hits.
Kayla English (9-9) took the loss for UD, allowing all nine runs in five innings.
Game Two - UMass 5, Dayton 2
Alysha Isaacson led off the fourth with a solo blast to center to put UD ahead 1-0.
Wince drove in pinch runner Mikayla Panko with a sacrifice fly before Lindsey Zenk doubled home Jena Cozza to put UMass ahead 2-1 in the fourth.
Tiffany Meeks followed with a pinch-hit, 2-run opposite-field blast to right to extend the Minutewomen's lead to 4-1. It was her second homer of the season and the third successful pinch-hit opportunity in five at bats.
Diaz-Patterson scored from second on Cote' Clark's infield single to make it a 5-1 edge after four innings.
The Flyers pushed a run across in the fifth on a Jordan Jennings ground out.
Klee tied her career-high with five strikeouts and the two runs allowed were her second-fewest in a start this year. She yielded just one run in Wednesday's win over Yale.
UMass will play host to Connecticut on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.
