AMHERST, Mass. -
Tewaaraton Finalist Will Manny earned USILA First Team All-American honors becoming the eighth UMass men's lacrosse player in program history to be named to the first group as announced on Thursday. Manny headlines a total of six Minutemen who earned All-American accolades following the 2012 campaign. The junior from Massapequa, N.Y., is also the first attackman from UMass to be recognized with first team honors since Sean Morris in 2006.
Along with Manny, senior midfielder Anthony Biscardi earned Second Team All-American honors, while senior close defenseman Tom Celentani was named to the All-American Third Team.
Senior attack Art Kell, junior defenseman Jake Smith and redshirt senior goalie Tim McCormack were all named to the Honorable Mention Team.
This marked just the third time in program history that UMass has placed a member on each of the USILA All-American teams (2003, 1981).
Manny is one of the five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award which will be announced on May 31 in Washington, D.C. Following the 2012 season, Manny was named the New England Player of the Year and the CAA Player of the Year. Manny was named to the All-New England First Team for the second consecutive year after posting 44 goals and 33 assists in 16 games as a junior.
Biscardi earned All-New England First Team and All-CAA First Team honors following the 2012 campaign and was a top-25 Tewaaraton nominee. Biscardi notched 21 goals, 7 assists and 12 groundballs as one of UMass' top midfielders.
One of the Minutemen's top close defensemen, Celentani was also selected to the All-New England First Team and the All-CAA First Team after leading UMass in caused turnovers (24) to go with 32 groundballs.
Kell was a member of the All-New England Second Team and All-CAA Second Team after closing the season as UMass' No. 2 scoring option behind Will Manny. Kell finished the year with 33 goals, 20 assists and 29 groundballs.
Smith is widely regarded as one of the top one-on-one shutdown close defensemen in the CAA. In 16 games, he posted 11 caused turnovers and 28 groundballs to help anchor the league's top defenses and one of the top-5 units in the country. Smith was also an integral part in the man-down unit which finished the year as one of the top 10 in the country.
McCormack was an All-New England First Team selection after having the best season of his career with a 7.09 goals-against-average and a .606 save percentage to go with a 15-1 record.
