Minutewomen Slip Up In 5-3 Loss At UConn

STORRS, Conn. - Massachusetts collected seven hits but made two costly errors and gave up a two-run home run the sixth as Connecticut claimed a 5-3 win at the Burrill Family Field on Tuesday.

After tying the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, the Minutewomen had gotten two outs in the sixth when Emily O'Donnell hit a 2-run home run over the wall in center to put the Huskies ahead 5-3.

UMass (16-11) saw its five-game win streak end and lost in Storrs for the first time since 2004. Sara Plourde (15-9) suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.

UConn (14-14) collected three hits but got 10 additional baserunners on via six walks, two hit batters and two errors. Kiki Savieriano (9-7) struck out five and walked three.

UMass got on the board in the first after loading the bases on consecutive singles from Cyndil Matthew and Quianna Diaz-Patterson and a walk to Katie Bettencourt. Plourde drove in Matthew as she reached on an error by Brittany Duclos. The Huskies got out of the jam by getting two outs at home via a fielder's choice and a runner caught trying to score on a wild pitch.

The Minutewomen doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third when Kyllie Magill hit a ball to the hole at short where it slipped under O'Donnell's glove which allowed Diaz-Patterson to score from second after she led off the inning with a double.

UConn scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The Huskies took their first lead when Marissa Guches singled to left and scored Jennifer Ward and O'Donnell.

UMass tied it in the sixth when Webster scored from second on a Matthew single. Plourde also extended her hitting streak to seven games while Diaz-Patterson moved hers to six straight.

Matthew, Diaz-Patterson and Christine Della Vecchia had two hits apiece for the Minutewomen.

UMass will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Boston College. First pitch at the UMass Softball Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
