AMHERST, Mass. - UMass lacrosse incoming freshman goaltender Zachary Oliveri was among 23 players named to the U.S. men's national under-19 team roster yesterday after a four-day tryout at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The squad was chosen from 123 tryout candidates by a player selection committee, which included 20 coaches from 15 different states.

The Ronkonkoma, N.Y. native who will come to UMass from Connetquot High School, was among 12 goalies vying for two roster spots on the squad that will compete in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) U19 Men's World Championships in Turku, Finland, in 2012. Team USA will be looking to defend its title from 2008, when it won gold at the quadrennial event, beating Canada 19-12 in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Oliveri was a member of team Long Island at the Empire State Games last summer and backstopped his squad to a Gold medal in the annual event. He was recently selected to as one of 200 of the nation's top boys' and girls' high school lacrosse players to compete in the 2011 Champion All-American Showcase, a US Lacrosse event. The showcases will be held as part of the ESPN RISE Games July 17-22, in Orlando, Fla., with the boys' championship game slated to air on ESPNU, Saturday, July 23 from 7-9 p.m.
