BOSTON - Kyllie Magill had two hits, including a triple, and drove in a pair of runs to lead UMass softball (14-14) to a 3-2 victory over Boston University (18-11) on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. The Minutewomen led 3-0, but the Terries plated two runs in the sixth inning and had runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh when a lineout to third base ended the game. UMass has now won a season-high five in a row.
After starting the game 0-for-2, Magill picked up two-out RBI hits in each of her last two at-bats with a single in the fourth inning and a triple in the sixth inning. Audrey Boutin drove in the game's first run with a single in the third.
Sara Plourde (12-10) won her fifth-straight decision, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out eight. She saw her school record no-hit innings streak end at 18 2/3 innings when Brittany Clendenny doubled to left field in the second inning and her shutout innings streak ended at 23 innings on Holli Kloetker's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
BU used an infield single, an intentional walk to April Setterlund, a ground out, and two stolen bases to put the tying run at third and the winning run at second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Plourde got a pop-out to shortstop and a lineout off the bat of Floetker to Teea Rogers at third to end the game.
What proved to be with winning run scored in the top of the sixth when, with two outs, Cyndil Matthew reached on an error on a ground ball to third base and scored when Magill roped a triple to left field. The unearned run off reliever Erin Schuppert made it a 3-0 game.
The Terriers finally got to Plourde in the bottom of the sixth. After retiring nine in a row entering the inning, the first three batters of the inning reached base on her with a walk and two singles. Floetker's fly-out to left brought in the first BU run, and Chelsea Kehr added the second run with a double to right-center with two outs to make it 3-2.
Plourde struck out pinch-hitter Whitney Tuthill with the bases loaded to get out of the inning with the lead.
UMass opened the scoring in the third inning with some clutch two-out hitting. Lindsey Webster doubled to right-center to start the rally, and after Meghan Carta walked, Boutin lined one through the left side to bring in Webster to make it a 1-0 game and gave the senior first baseman her 12th RBI of the season.
After Tiffany Meeks led off the fourth inning with a single, her pinch-runner, Stephanie Mix, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Magill's single to center field to make it 2-0.
The Minutewomen return home to host St. Bonaventure on Sunday in a noon doubleheader.
