Sam Houston State Tops Baseball, 9-1

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Playing its second game of the day, the UMass baseball team could not hold off Sam Houston State, dropping a 9-1 decision at Don Sanders Stadium on Saturday night. The victory was the Bearkats' (8-2) seventh straight, while the Minutemen are now 0-3 on the season.
Ryan Mooney drew a one-out walk and came around to score on an RBI single by Mark Hudson after stealing second to put Sam Houston on the board in the top of the first.
The Bearkats added three more runs in the third as Mooney led off with a single to right and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Singleton. Kevin Miller followed up with a two-run single that brought home Greg Olson and Mark Hudson.
Sam Houston scored twice in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Miller and an RBI single off the bat of John Hale. Then in the sixth, Braeden Riley doubled and eventually came in on an error.
Senior Peter Copa homered with one out in the bottom of the seventh for the Minutemen's lone run.
Capping off the scoring, Daniel Nottebart led of the top of the ninth with a solo shot and Miller singled in Jake Arrington.
Junior Glen Misho pitched five innings in his start for UMass and took the loss (0-1). He surrendered six runs, four earned, on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout. Sophomore Dennis Torres tossed four innings of relief in his collegiate debut while allowing just one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Brent Powers pitched the complete game four-hitter to earn the win (2-0) for the Bearkats, fanned nine and walked two.
In addition to Copa, freshmen Kyle Adie and Josh Messier had one hit apiece for the Minutemen as did senior Matt Gedman.
Miller led the way for Sam Houston with a 3-for-4 night at the plate and four RBI. Hudson finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Mooney was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
UMass will wrap up its weekend at the Bearkat Invitational when the squad rematches with Sam Houston tomorrow, Mar. 6, at 3 p.m.
