UMass Tennis To Be Televised For First Time

AMHERST, Mass. - On Sunday, Mar. 27 UMass will be providing its first coverage of a tennis match on TV's CBS 3 Now vs. the Fairfield Stags at the Bay Road Tennis Club at 1230 p.m. The match will be brought to you on Comcast's channel 293, Charter's 230, and the campus' channel 79 with on-air broadcasters Josh Maurer and Cody Chrusciel providing you with the play-by-play of the match and Ethan Sobel as the sideline reporter. The tennis match's TV producer will be Sean Mccluskey, who will deliver the viewer with in-game shots, game graphics, highlights and replays.

Currently, the UMass tennis team is 9-8 (2-0 in A-10) and have lost its four of the last five matches and looking to get back on track this weekend. On Saturday, Mar. 26, UMass faces A-10 foe St. Bonaventure (6-8) with the Minutewomen leading the all-time series, 3-1, winning the last match back in 2004. As for Fairfield, UMass plays them on Sunday at 1230 p.m and currently riding a 10 game winning streak against the Stags (10-0 all-time), dating back to its first match in 1989.

Boney Blasting Through UMass Records
Senior Candynce Boney has been playing well this season and finds herself climbing the ladder to be recognized as one of the top ten players in both singles and doubles in UMass. Currently, Boney stands tied for fifth all-time in singles wins and fifth all-time in doubles with four matches remaining. If she were to win out the rest of the season, she could end up as high as fourth all-time in singles and fourth all-time in doubles wins at UMass.

Senior day vs. Sacred Heart
The UMass tennis team will honor its seniors before its match against the the Scarlet Knights on Apr. 1 at 1230 p.m. This year's seniors include Tanisha Hodgson, Kaitlyn Carpenter, and Candynce Boney. Hodgson has played most of her matches in doubles with many different partners, but has paired with Boney down the stretch in the No. 2 doubles. Carpenter has bounced around any where from No. 3 to No. 6 singles, but has found her success in the No. 5 singles with a record of 6-1. As for Boney, she has found herself in the UMass tennis record books. In her four years here, she currently is fifth all-time in wins for both singles and doubles. As for this season, she has played very well in the No. 3 singles, tallying an 8-4 record in dual matches.

Home is where the Wins are
UMass is finding their success at home, when they get the opportunities. So far, the UMass tennis team is 5-0 on the season at home (1-0 fall, 4-0 spring). With UMass not having a home court on campus, the team looks to Hampshire College for its facilities, as the Bay Road Tennis Club is their home away from home in spring.

Winning from the Bottom-Up
Coach Dixon believes that to find success in her squad, the bottom players are the key to winning the match. With a winning record of 9-8 to date, a big reason for that is the No. 4, No. 5, and No.6 singles players. At the No.4 singles, Jessica Podlofsky has found a comfort zone in this spot, as she is 4-2 being recently place in this position. With Podlofsky moving up to No. 4, Kaitlyn Carpenter has found her success in the No. 5 spot, compiling a 6-1 record in this position. Finally, Chantal Swiszcz being placed in the rotation as the No. 6 singles, she has excelled also, racking up a 7-2 record in her respected position.

Scouting the St. Bonaventure Bonnies
One of UMass' A-10 foes, the Bonnies are currently 6-8 on the season, winning its last two of three games vs. Robert Wesleyan Univ. and Robert Morris. St. Bonaventure has had a tough time away from home, as it currently is 2-4 (4-4 at home).

Scouting the Fairfield Stags
The Stags are 4-5 overall, also winning its last two of three against St. Joseph's and Albany, 5-2. Fairfield has found most of its success on the road with a 3-1 record. Two of Fairfield's players to watch for are Freshmen Shairssa Ryan and Monica Yajima, both who play in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Guide to Collegiate Tennis
Order of Events
 Three doubles matches are played, followed by six singles matches
 Each team ranks its singles players from No. 1 to No.6 and its doubles teams from No. 1 to No. 3
 Players will match up by rank: No. 1 v. No.1, No. 2 v. No. 2, etc.

Team Scoring
 Seven total points are available
 The six singles matches are each composed of up to three six-game sets; the first player to win two sets earns a point for his team
 The three doubles matches are each composed of one eight-game set; the team that wins at least two of the three doubles matches earns the one available doubles point
 Under normal circumstances, all matches will be played, even if one team has already earned the four points needed to win.

General Tennis Scoring
 Games consist of four points: 15,30,40, and Game
 Each game must be won by two points
 If the game score is tied at 40-40, a player must win the next rally to earn "Advantage", then the next point to earn "Game"; otherwise, the score returns to 40-40
 Singles sets must be won by two games; however, if the score reaches 6-6, one tiebreaker game is played

The UMass tennis team will continue its spring season, traveling to play Boston University on Apr. 1 at the Track and Tennis Center in Boston at 3 p.m.
