CLEARWATER, Fla. - Audrey Boutin had a six-hit, five-RBI day at the plate, while Sara Plourde struck out 28 batters in 13 shutout innings to lead UMass softball (6-10) to a pair of victories, 7-1 over Colorado State and 7-0 over Green Bay, on Saturday at the USF Under Armout Showcase. The wins move the Minutewomen to 4-0 on the weekend heading into their final game of the tournament, a 9:30 a.m. tilt against St. John's on Sunday.
Boutin went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the opener over Colorado State, and finished the day by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs against Green Bay. The senior first baseman was clutch all day, driving in a run on five of her six hits.
Plourde (6-8) continued her terrific weekend, throwing six shutout innings against the Rams, allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning 10. Against the Phoenix, the junior All-American struck out a season-high 18 batters while walking just one in a four-hit complete-game shutout.
Meghan Carta and Jordan Storro both went a combined 3-for-7 on the day. Carta had a double and drove in a pair of runs, while Storro scored twice and drove in two.
The Minutewomen jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Colorado State. A leadoff walk and an error set up Boutin's first RBI of the day, a double to center. The second run scored on the Rams' second error of the inning and Teea Rogers drove in the third run with a single to left-center.
Carta drove in the fourth run with a double in the second inning before the game was blown open in the fourth with two more runs, on a RBI fielder's choice by Carta, and a single by Boutin, both with two outs.
Storro added the seventh run in the top of the seventh when she singled to drive in Katie Bettencourt.
The Rams scored their lone run on a solo home run by Emily Pohl to lead off the bottom of the seventh off Caroline Raymond, who worked the final frame in relief of Plourde.
For the fourth game in a row, UMass scored in the first inning against Green Bay as Boutin's two-out single plated Kyllie Magill (2-for-3, 2 RBI), who had walked to lead off the inning.
Another Boutin RBI single and a two-out RBI single by Storro made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the fourth, and Boutin came through yet again in the fifth with a hit that plated Lindsey Webster and made it 4-0.
The Minutewomen put the game completely out of reach in the sixth with a two-run double off the bat of Magill and a RBI single by Webster, making it 7-0.
Plourde started off the game against the Green Bay by striking out the first six batters and later had two streaks of five Ks in a row, one of which finished off the game.
UMass has outscored its opponents a combined 35-1 in its four games at the Under Armour Showcase.
