TAMPA - Meghan Carta hit a grand slam, Kyllie Magill hit a three-run homer, and Tiffany Meeks added a two-run blast as the UMass softball team's offensive exploded 16 hits in a 17-0 five-inning victory over Toledo to begin play at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Friday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium. It was the Minutewomen's highest run total in five years. Sara Plourde struck out 11 and allowed just one hit to earn the victory.
Freshman Lindsey Webster collected four hits in the game and scored three runs, while Cyndil Matthew was 3-for-3 with a walk.
The 17 runs was UMass' most runs and largest margin of victory since the Minutewomen set the school record with a 20-0 victory in five innings over Dartmouth on March 29, 2006 at the UMass Softball Complex.
The big inning came in the fourth when the Minutewomen plated eight runs on six hits, two errors, and a walk. Eight batters reached base before the Rockets recorded an out, as all eight scored, with Carta's grand slam and a Meeks' two-run homer being the big blasts.
The Minutewomen's first eight runs of the game, five in the first inning and three in the third, all came with two outs.
UMass' first inning was extended by a two-out error, setting up six straight hits, plating five runs. Teea Rogers' two-run triple was the biggest hit of the frame.
Magill's three-run blast, her second homer of the season, came with two away in the third to give UMass an 8-0 lead.
Matthew worked a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to account for UMass' 17th run.
Plourde did not allow a hit until a one-out double in the fourth inning and fanned 11 while walking one in four innings of work. Freshman Caroline Raymond worked a scoreless fifth to complete the shutout victory.
UMass continues play on Friday evening with a 6 pm. game against the host USF Bulls.
