AMHERST, Mass. - UMass softball legend Danielle Henderson was named an assistant coach at Ohio State, it was announced today. The 1999 UMass graduate and 2009 UMass Hall of Fame inductee will work primarily as the Buckeyes' pitching coach.
Henderson takes over the position vacated by Emily Beach, who took over as head coach of New Mexico.
Ohio State is coming off a 39-14 season that saw the Buckeyes host an NCAA Regional in Columbus, going 2-2 and being eliminated by California.
Henderson was a volunteer assistant with the Minutewomen in 2004-05 after serving the previous four seasons (2000-04) as an assistant coach under head coach Elaine Sortino.
One of the most decorated UMass athletes of all-time, Henderson finished her career in 1999 with 25 school-records and ranked second in NCAA history with 1,343 strikeouts. She still owns the NCAA record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched, rattling off 105 straight shutout frames from March 16 to May 2, 1999. At the conclusion of that season, Henderson received the Honda Award, given annually to the nation's top softball player in addition to earning her third All-American honor.
In her four-year career, she posted a 108-35 record in 161 appearances (964 innings), a 0.70 ERA, 72 shutouts, 135 complete games, and threw an astounding 14 no-hitters and three perfect games. In 2001, Henderson was recognized for her accomplishments by becoming the first player in UMass softball history to have her jersey retired.
Henderson went on to be a member of the US National Team, helping pitch Team USA to a Olympic gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Games.
In 2009, in her first year of eligibility, Henderson was inducted into the George "Trigger" Burke UMass Athletic Hall of Fame.
