AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Sara Plourde and Sophomore Rachelle Bourque were selected as Co-Umass Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Both will be honored at the Umass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, May 12, held in the Campus Center Room 1009.
Plourde receives the recognition for the 4th time this year as she continued her dominance in the circle last week, leading No. 20 UMass to four victories in a 5-0 week for the Minutewomen. She struck out 38 batters in 22 innings pitched, while allowing just one earned run and holding the opposition to a .135 batting average. On Wednesday against Boston College, she broke the UMass single-season record for strikeouts, surpassing Danielle Henderson's 1999 mark of 465. On Saturday, in a one-hit 10-K shutout of Temple, Plourde broke the school-record for wins in a season with her 35th, passing Brandice Balschmiter's mark of 34 in 2009. The sophomore also eclipsed the 500-strikeout mark for the season, becoming just the 11th pitcher in NCAA history to do so. She did not allow a single run to conference opponents in 15 innings, while fanning 29.
Rachelle Bourque earns her first career recognition as she helped lead the women's track & field team to a third-place finish at the New England Championships. Bourque captured the New England title in the javelin. She followed up her school record-setting performance at the Atlantic 10 Championships last week by taking first in a field of 19 competitors with a throw of 135-04.
